Cassava Improvement in Tanzania: Plant Breeding to Protect Cassava Farmers' Livelihoods

An in-depth educational film about the impacts of cassava brown streak disease and cassava mosaic disease on cassava production in Tanzania, and scientific efforts to breed resistant varieties using a predictive computational technique called genomic selection. The film was shot in locations in Tanzania in March 2018 by Chris Knight of the Next Generation Cassava Breeding Project at International Programs-CALS of Cornell University. NextGen aims to significantly increase the rate of genetic gain in cassava breeding. NextGen is a partnership among International Programs at Cornell University, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and National Root Crops Research Institute breeding centers in Nigeria, the National Crops Resources Research Institute in Uganda, DRD, the Boyce Thompson Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy, USDA-ARS, the West African Centre for Crop Improvement in Ghana and Makerere University in Uganda.
