Born At 25 Weeks: Mia's NICU Journey

The Royal’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) cares for over 1,000 premature babies each year. World Prematurity Day is a celebration of the incredible staff that care for these tiny babies and also a celebration of the incredible strength and resilience of premature babies and their families. Baby Mia is one of them. Her story, like many other premature babies, started months before she was due to enter the world. In the lead-up to the Royal Giving Day and for World Prematurity Day, Mia’s parents, Guilia and Raja have shared their story. "Mia was born on 13 August, 15 weeks before her due date, weighing only 636 grams. She was the smallest baby anyone can ever imagine. Her skin was almost transparent and so fragile we couldn't touch her. She had so many wires and cables all over her that it was impossible to get a good idea of her face or of her body. It was heartbreaking. As a mum of a preterm baby you feel a lot of guilt, and fear, and pain, and despair. It is hard. The NICU experience is a roller-coaster - like the doctors say - babies do well until they don't, and things can change quickly. It's two steps forward, one step back, week after week after week; and it drains you from the inside. Mia went through a lot during her 97 days in the NICU. She had a PDA, she had the NEC, and she had the ROP - a lot of acronyms that I wished I had never known. Many of these conditions used to be fatal or used to cause life-long disabilities. Thanks to research and technological advances, these conditions are no longer that scary. Mia had a hard journey, but she is now thriving. The Royal Hospital for Women delivered us a miracle."
