Just on the eastern edge of western NC, Kerr Scott Dam trails sit just outside of Wilkesboro, just a stones throw from Boone, Statesville, and I40. Kerr Scott Dam is a reservoir managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers with some pretty kick ass trails scattered among the shores. This IMBA EPIC is 33 miles of super swoopy, fast flowy, yet punchy trails. It starts at Dark Mtn, the most rugged of the trails in this 3 trail system. Though, while it is the most rugged, it still has plenty of flow! With in the past few years Dark Mtn has iconically dubbed this space as “Wilkes-bermie-O”! From Dark Mtn you pop over the dam and drop into the Over Mountain Victory Trail, a national historic trail that parallels 268, which takes you most of the way to Warrior creek. There are 2 “pop-off” options, Shiner’s Run and Horton’s Hollar, that add to the OVT before spitting you out onto 268 for a few miles. Normally, you enter the Warrior Creek trail system through the Warrior Creek Campground, however, a sink hole has closed the road to access the trails (and consequently the campground) there so you have to ride 1.5 more miles to the pump track parking lot and start the Warrior Creek loop there (directions below). Once you drop into the Warrior Creek loop you are treated to 13 miles of lake side flow. Dropping in and out of the coves along the shore of the reservoir you’ll start to feel the last two trails build in your legs until you complete the loop and gain 3600 ft of vert. This is where it would be good to have arranged a shuttle back to the start because this IMBA Epic is a point to point.
