What Is Vasomotor Rhinitis?

What is vasomotor rhinitis? I'm Dr. Manan Shah, I'm an ENT and allergist with Wyndly Health. Vasomotor rhinitis is a term for when your nose is just constantly running, and it might not be due to an external stimuli. So allergic rhinitis is when something like pollen or dust gets into your nose and your body is irritated and creates mucus to wash those things out. That's called allergic rhinitis due to an allergen. But vasomotor rhinitis is when it's not an external trigger, but your nose just runs almost like you have an allergy, but you don't. I like to think of it as a malfunction of the nerve signal coming from the brain to the nose, and it's making too much mucus. So there are treatments like Atrovent or Ipratropium bromide and then Azelastine that we can do to help those. And lastly, there's a treatment called the ClariFix or the RhinAer, where you essentially irritate the nerve that goes to these turbinates and you try to decrease the signal from the brain to the nose to create that mucus. These are surgeries that an ENT can do under local anesthesia at any local office. Anyways, if you'd like to learn more, please subscribe.
