SEIDR 1:8 - Magic in Norse Tradition

This video is part of a series of 8 videos, where Annette will lead you on a journey through literary sources, old and new research, and 30 years of modern experience of Seidr, towards a deeper understanding. The videos are free for all to watch. If you also want to join the special teaching program that includes webinar Q&As connected to each video, see the links below for info and booking. A NOTE on a few keywords in this program, Seiðr and Vǫlva: How to pronounce them? How are they spelled in English and other languages? In English there is no actual translation for the Norse word seiðr, instead, the word is adopted and anglicized into a variety of forms seidhr, seidh, seidr, seithr, seith, or seid. Commonly accepted in writing. In both Swedish, Norwegian and Danish it is “sejd”. For pronunciation, you should first know that the character ð is kind of a soft d, pronounced somewhat like “th” in “there”. So seiðr can sound something like “say-ther” or “say-th”. An anglicized version like seidr or seid, may be pronounced something like 'sayd'. For the Norse word vǫlva or völva, you will often in English texts see völva, or volva used, pronounced pretty straightforward. In Scandinavia, we have völva in Swedish, volve in Norwegian, and vølve in Danish. I aim, in the teaching program, to approach Norse pronunciation as well as I can. But as I have Danish as my mother tongue, I sometimes lapse into using Danish words and pronunciations. The videos will be launched every 2 weeks during spring 2022. Videos will be available from - 19 January, 2 February, 16 February, 2 March, 16 March, 30 March, 13 April, 27 April More about Annette Høst’s work: https://www.shamanism.dk/about-annette And https://www.shamanism.dk for info about Scandinavian Center for Shamanic Studies.
