I honestly wasn't sure when I'd get to this review. The packaging is nice and simple, not the overpackaged, hard-to-shoplift garbage that Walmart usually requires. The most annoying part was the tape dot- that's easily handled. Pretty sure this is the Superior folding palette. The Swatch Test Same basic problem as the regular Superior palette- you can't open it all the way to access all the paints simultaneously. I'll swatch one set at a time. I'm not going to preactivate these because Superior watercolors tend to do better if you don't. All the colors activated quickly and required no preactivation (minus the lighter violet, which would have benefitted from more time), and all the colors are relatively saturated. The neutrals feel more natural- good yellow ochre and burnt sienna. While there isn't a lot of granulation, some brands do granulate more finely than others, which is typical of Chinese and Japanese watercolors. There's some opacity to the colors, but not necessarily a lot during the swatch test, and the white is basically useless, it has basically no opacity. While there might be some dye, I feel these are probably finely milled pigments, based on my experiences with Superior watercolors. Obviously, there are optical brighteners in here, the water is p muddy, but that's also pretty normal for inexpensive watercolors. Color Mixing: Optical: Layer decently well, create optical blends, don't reactivate overly. Atomic: The mixing space is kinda a joke- small, difficult to access. You can't have all the colors out simultaneously, especially if you want to access the mixing area. Easy to pollute or muddy colors. Some granulation with some of the colors. Able to mix decent secondary colors. Lift Test: Everything kinda lifts the same, which is strange Wet into Wet Test: A little granulation, but not really much. The Ultramarine blue is more like a Cobalt or a vetiver blue.
