Exploring an Abandoned 1920 Cable Car Line (32% gradient!) / 朝熊登山鉄道ケーブルカー跡 (Urbex Japan / 日本の廃虚)

Mount Asama’s cable car line, officially known as Asama Mountain Railway (Asama Tozan Tetsudo/ 朝熊登山鉄道) was opened on November 1st 1925 and was proudly referred as the cable car line with the highest slope gradient (32% at some point) in the country and even East Asia. Services ran from 7am to 7pm every 15 minutes. As Japan was entering her worst phase in the Pacific War, the line was downgraded to a nonessential service and closed on January 1st 1944. The rail tracks were dismantled and requisitioned as war material by the military government. After the war the cable car service never resumed and the line was officially closed down on July 15th 1964. At the foot of the mountain was Hiraiwa Station (平岩駅). Traces of the old platform and tracks can still be observed. At the end of the 1.1km long line, after going through two tunnels, was Asamatake Station (朝熊岳駅) where the station building and toilets nearby still remain. This station is located at an altitude of 415 meters, the mountain itself is 555 meters high, from where one can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Ise Bay, regarded as one the 100 Landscapes of Japan. The mountain is now visited by many hikers although the trails and the ascent are far from being safe or light.
