Torna! (1954) by Raffaello Matarazzo.(with ENG SUBS).

Torna! (1954) by Raffaello Matarazzo, with Amedeo Nazzari, Yvonne Sanson, Enrica Dyrell, Giovanna Scotto, Liliana Gerace, Maria Grazia Sandri. This movie is already available on YouTube. However, this black and white version has been re-edited and improved in terms of contrast and brightness. New English subtitles have also been edited and put in synch. “Torna” is considered one of the best examples of Italian melodrama, or ‘tearjerkers’ movies [strappalacrime], of which Matarazzo was a prolific and successful author. These movies were very popular but also specifically produced with low budgets, so to generate large earnings for some of the producing companies of the time. Their public was largely, but not exclusively, made up of female viewers, who especially in the Fifties crowded the cinema theatres during the prescribed time for public group gatherings and social exchange. Stories had to be simple, scripts easy to understand, characterization not too complex, the language had to be non-dialectal and therefore suitable to the national distribution of the titles. This does not mean that a certain degree of realistic context was not present, in so far as the contemporary tradition of neo-realism was also recognised by the authors and writers of those same movies. On the other hand, melodrama often openly relied on the public’s familiarity with contemporary sentimental songs, that were included in the soundtrack (as in “Torna”) or sung by actors during the narrative of the movies. The presence of these songs created an aura of ‘sentimental fantasy’ that captivated and allured the audience. Movies like “Torna” are however perfect to represent Italian post-War “structures of feeling” in society and therefore artistically mirrored and exploited in modern media and cinema. (FP) “Key formulae that characterize Italian melodrama, and genre production generally, are repetition with variation, condensed narrative, and character simplification. One of the most striking areas of repetition in these melodramas affecting a range of visual, aural, character and narrative fields are the recurring use of the same pair of actors, Amedeo Nazzari and Yvonne Sanson, as the unfortunate couple in Matarazzo’s Catene, Tormento (1950), I figli di nessuno (1951), Chi e’ senza peccato (1952), Torna! (1953) and L’angelo bianco (1954). The same child actors also appear in several of his films (Rosalia Randazzo in Catene, Tormento and I figli di nessuno, Maria Grazia Sandri in Torna! and Vortice, 1954).” (Maggie Günsberg, Italian Cinema: Gender and Genre, 2005, p.21).
