Maxim Vengerov: Harmonic thinking to discover your own interpretation

Read the accompanying written article here: http://www.maximvengerov.com/part-8 In this new educational series "Vengerov's Views", I cover key topics which come up frequently in my masterclasses, chosen to mirror the journey of learning. It all starts and ends with the source, the music, and understanding and telling the story behind it. And then along the way, as performers we must overcome some technical challenges to be able to bring our musical ideas to life. The examples in these videos are chosen to complement written articles, where I explain the concepts in greater depth. It has been an interesting challenge to write for the first time some thoughts about my approach to music and playing the violin - let me know in the comments what you think! Part 8: Harmonic thinking to discover your own interpretation Like architecture, music has structure and form. It is part of our job as the performer to understand the building blocks of a musical work, and make informed choices about their relative significance. In this way, we form our own interpretation of the composer's intentions, as we feel it. A compelling interpretation will reflect not only an intellectual understanding of how a work is constructed, but also artistic decisions about how to bring this across in the moment of performance. In part 8 of this series I focus on how thinking about structure and harmony in music can help shape interpretation, and share with you some recommendations for how to uncover these aspects of a work for yourself.
