Neil Price: Salme and the Viking Phenomenon / Salme ja viikingite fenomen

EN: The discovery of the first of the Salme boats in 2008 marked a watershed in recent studies of the late Iron Age in the Baltic: it is no exaggeration to say that these two burials were an archaeological revelation. From the material culture and funerary rituals, it was clear early on that the Salme finds had connections with the boat burial cultures of eastern central Sweden, a link later confirmed by isotopic analysis of the human remains. The understandable academic interest that this generated took on a more practical character in late 2015, when the Swedish Research Council funded a ten-year programme at Uppsala University to investigate the origins of the ‘Viking phenomenon’. Part of the research project’s objectives involve the re-evaluation and final publication of the Valsgärde cemetery in Uppland – among the closest parallels to Salme – and to deconstruct the artificial border of the Vendel-Viking transition. In this adjusted context, the mid-eighth-century finds at Salme took on even greater relevance, and formal contact between the respective research groups was an obvious step. This talk will set out the background and thinking behind the Viking Phenomenon project, its aims and preliminary results, in the context of our collaborations with the Salme team. --- The conference was supported by Enterprise Estonia from the European Regional Development Fund. Alustades materiaalsest kultuurist ja matuserituaalidest, oli algusest peale selge, et Salme leidudel on seos Ida-Kesk-Rootsi paatmatustega, mis sai hiljem kinnitust ka inimjäänuste isotoopanalüüsidega. Arusaadavalt põhjustas leid akadeemilist huvi, mis sai 2015. aastal praktilisema sisu, kui Rootsi Teadusnõukogu rahastas Uppsala Ülikooli kümneaastast programmi, et uurida ‘viikingite fenomeni’ algeid. Uurimusprojekti eesmärkide seas on Uppsalas asuva Valsgärde kalmistu, mis on Salmele lähim paralleel, ümberhindamine ja tulemuste lõplik avaldamine ning Vendeli-viikingite ülemineku tehispiiri dekonstrueerimine. Selles uuendatud kontekstis omandasid Salme kaheksanda sajandi keskpaiga leiud veelgi olulisema tähenduse ning ametlik kontakt vastavate uurimisrühmade vahel oli ilmselgelt vajalik. Käesolev ettekanne tutvustab viikingite projekti tausta ja mõttekäike, eesmärke ja esialgseid tulemusi meie koostöö kontekstis Salme meeskonnaga. --- Konverentsi rahastas EAS toetusmeetmest Euroopa Regionaalarengu Fond.
