Day 1 and 2 – Barbados So after a 5am start to drive to Manchester airport – and after parking in the excellent Meet and Great – we were welcomed into the airport with the sign of a loooonnng snaking queue for the 2 P&O flights with TUI. At check-in we then find that our flight has had the plane swapped out and is delayed until 2.30pm. Even more frustrating – TUI have transferred all our names across incorrectly resulting in a long debate to prove we are who we are. After security, some food in Wagamama’s – a slow browse around the shops we’re called to the gate – which is a very long walk from what is civilisation in Manchester airport. This gives us a view of a plane from the 1980s – but with no food, drink and one toilet. Another hour plus of sitting doing nothing. Waiting. The frustration is added to as there is no communication from TUI and no representation from P&O. Eventually we board – another hour sat on the tarmac before a 9-hour flight to Barbados – with no in flight entertainment – or comfort. Fortunately we did go prepared with downloads on tablets to keep us occupied. On arrival in Barbados and eventually at the cruise port – we really felt this is where P&O should have been stepping up a bit – instead at the desks they almost brushed the delays off (granted it was TUI and not P&O). Boarding of the ship was even into deck 4 and not the atrium – a real feel of keep them all out the way. In the end – as our cases were now still in transit from the plane we went to sleep in the clothes we had travelled in – welcome to your holiday as you sleep in your clothes. For info – the flight qualified for compensation, we claimed compensation and got it. For day 2 – New Year’s Eve – we just had a wander into Bridgetown – out to Carlisle Bay to see if we could find a turtle. We didn’t take any excursions to do this, just made the day up as we went along. As luck would have it – after some casual snorkeling I found that Turtle. For the evening P&O had done a celebration dinner – we were surprised to find we’d been given club dining and not freedom – however looking at the queues were quite glad of our 6.30 sitting giving us plenty of time for the rest of the evening. The Party was found on the Lido deck by the pools – a proper party atmosphere – cheesy music and Prosecco. We continued the afterparty into the nightclub until the early hours.
