Guildford to Alton – Hastings DEMU cab ride – 30 September 2017 – audio partly from back cab

Hastings Diesels Ltd’s Alpine Sunset railtour, Part 3: Cab view from Guildford to Alton, with back-cab soundtrack from the 13th minute onwards. Filmed from our preserved Hastings DEMU on Saturday 30 September 2017, during our Alpine Sunset railtour. . In this video we cover 19 miles and 58 chains. First, we run along the North Downs Line to Aldershot South Junction: in this section, we are following first the original Guildford to Farnham Line of 1849, until we reach the 40mph right-hand curve at the site of Ash Junction where the old line via Tongham used to continue straight ahead. Since that closed in 1960, we are obliged to go ‘the long way round’ to reach Farnham; and at Aldershot Junctions we traverse the spur to join the Woking – Alton line. Beyond Farnham we join the single-track section through Alice Holt Forest to Alton. . Video footage is from an unattended unmonitored forward-facing cab-camera in motor coach 60116 Mountfield. The soundtrack is from the leading cab initially, but after Ash station the Route Conductor joins the cab to assist the driver with the section for which he did not have route-knowledge: as it is not possible to publish such material, at that point we switch to an accurately synchronised audio recording made in the rear cab. . This outing began at Hastings and ran via Tonbridge (see part 1), Redhill (see part 2) and Guildford to Alton and onto the preserved Mid-Hants Watercress Line to Alresford. Following a shuttle service to and from Alton, it then retraced its steps to Aldershot; it ran via Camberley to Ascot, then to Reading, before returning via Wokingham to Guildford where the outward route was then retraced. . This is part 3, and part 4 will take us ‘over the Alps’ to Alresford. . 0:00 – GUILDFORD station 1:01 – Guildford North Junction 8:11 – Wanborough station 10:03 – site of Ash Junction 11:45 – Ash station 13:06 – Aldershot South Junction 15:15 – Aldershot North Junction 18:17 – Aldershot Tunnel 18:54 – Aldershot station 21:42 – site of Farnham Junction 25:32 – Farnham station 31:20 – Entering the single-line section 36:12 – Bentley station 41:45 – Former Ministry of Food siding 42:10 – Holybourne Oil Terminal 44:49 – ALTON station .
