Today we are gathered to pay a tribute to John Mullaney of Mullaney Brothers in Sligo, Ireland. The Mayor of Sligo, Councillor Declan Bree, has led the chorus of tributes for Mr Mullaney, who passed away at the age of 91 on Sunday, August 20, 2023. He had dedicated an astounding 70 years of his life to Mullaney Brothers, the beloved establishment on O’Connell Street that has been a cornerstone of our town since 1909. John Mullaney's impact transcended the thresholds of his store. He held a deep passion for the arts, with a particular affection for theatre, classical music, and the literary creations of WB Yeats. He was not only a revered historian but a walking treasure trove of the town's history.
