The Best Italian Food in NYC - Arthur Avenue Food Crawl

Series: Eating with Experts A day of eating around Arthur Avenue, New York’s ‘Real Little Italy,’ with our friends Carlo and Daniel, who are experts on the neighbourhood. 🎥 FILMED + EDITED by Bryan Rogers http://www.bryanrogersfilm.com Daniel runs Madonia Bakery which was opened by his great grandfather Mario Madonia on Arthur Avenue back in 1918. Carlo runs Casa Della Mozzarella with his dad Orazio, who opened the store 30 years ago in 1993. The stops we made during our Arthur Avenue Italian food tour were; Madonia Bakery Casa Della Mozzarella Delillo Pastry Shop Zero Otto Nove Borgatti’s Ravioli and Egg Noodles Bronx Beer Hall inside Arthur Avenue Retail Market Dominick’s Restaurant This is one of our favorite areas of New York City, a place steeped in traditions and history and filled with amazing Italian and Italian American restaurants, delis and pasta shops. Our first stop took us to Madonia Bakery, still going strong after opening at 2348 Arthur Ave way back in 1918 after Mario Madonia originally began selling bread from a pushcart after migrating from Italy. They’re known for their signature olive bread, which they can sell up to 1000 loaves a day of during the holidays, as well as their filled to order cannoli, which are some of New York’s best cannoli. From there we took freshly baked bread with us over to Casa Della Mozzarella, a 30 year old Italian deli started by Orazio Carciotto at 604 E 187th St, Bronx. He now runs it with his son and our friend Carlo, who shows us how they make fresh mozzarella daily, Si’s favorite bocconcini, as well as their famous ‘Casa’ Italian sandwich with prosciutto di parma, mozzarella, sun dried peppers and balsamic glaze. A few doors down from there, we made a stop in to Delillo Pastry Shop at 610 E 187th St, Bronx for cappuccinos but they also do a nice selection of Italian pastries. Zero Otto Nove at 2357 Arthur Ave was our destination for lunch, the restaurant is designed like the piazza in owner Chef Roberto’s hometown of Salerno. We eat pizza, polenta and meatballs and their pasta in cartoccio which is mafalde pasta cooked in tinfoil with pesto, cherry tomatoes & burrata cheese. A quick beer was in order at Bronx Beer Hall which is located inside Arthur Avenue Retail Market, we had delicious Italian pilsners in this historic retail market that opened in 1940. And our final stop was at Dominick’s Restaurant, an old school establishment located at 2335 Arthur Ave, where diners sit together at long communal tables and feast on family style Italian dishes like lasagne and veal and potatoes. All in all, an epic day exploring NY’s real little Italy of Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.
