Africa - Karoo, Prins Albert, Swartberg, Mountain Pass, Matjiesfontein - South Africa

I'm on the road again .......Travelling through South Africa in the Karoo. Swartberg Nature Reserve - Gamkaskloof (aka Die Hel). Declared a World Heritage Site in 2004. Swartberg Nature Reserve stretches 121 000 hectares between the Klein and Groot Karoo, bordering the Gamkapoort Nature Reserve to the north and the Towerkop Nature Reserve to the west. This reserve conserves a diversity of vegetation from renosterveld to mountain fynbos and spekboom veld. Kobus se gat Restourant: At the foot of the majestic Swartberg Mountain Pass, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site in the Klein Karoo, is Kobus se Gat. This proudly South African traditional veldt restaurant offers a farmstall, authentic Klein Karoo cuisine prepared on the open fire, and a lovely view over the Swartberg Mountain Range. Prins Albert: Much has been written about the charming Karoo village of Prince Albert, but there is more to this town than pretty houses, quaint eateries and arty shops. Here are some Prince Albert facts that you may not have heard. The town still uses the a lei water system, using water channelled from the mountains. Prince Albert has a temperate climate with high temperatures in summer, with an average of 33–35 °C, and 17 °C in the winter months. Winter is mainly sunny with colder temperatures and chilly nights, reaching midwinter minimums of 2 °C, with frost in places and some snow on the nearby Swartberg mountains. The village has many authentic Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings, thirteen of which are National Monuments. There are several olive farms and other very large export fruit farms in the area, as well as wine producers, sheep farms and an export mohair trade. Birding, hiking, cycling and stargazing are other pursuits for visitors. The area is well known for its endemic veld plants. Matjiesfontein: Old cars and wagons sit in the parking lot outside the station and welcome you to Matjiesfontein. Matjiesfontein was founded in 1884 by the legendary and energetic Scottish railway man, James Douglas Logan. The village established itself as a fashionable Victorian health spa, and is now well known for its splendid historical buildings and a peace and timelessness that is rare in modern-day South Africa... Matjiesfontein is surrounded by the picturesque Witteberg Mountains. The historic village lies just off the N1 highway 28-kilometres west of Laingsburg and at the junction of the R354 that leads through some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Great Karoo to the isolated village of Sutherland on the high Roggeveld Plateau.
