"Do you hear the people sing" - orchestra with chorus by Hong Kongers

Over a hundred people recorded, "Do You Hear the People Sing," a song that represents this era. Musicians responded to a call to action and formed a 40 member orchestra and 60 plus member chorus within a short amount of time to record "Do You Hear the People Sing" in three languages (Cantonese, English, Mandarin); people from all walks of life also contributed to the production of this MV (music video). Cantonese:    • 《Do you hear the people sing 試問誰還未發聲》...   Mandarin:    • 《Do you hear the people sing 聽見人民在吶喊》...   Lyrics: Do you hear the people sing, singing a song of angry men It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again, When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes. Will you join in our crusade Who will be strong and stand with me? Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see, Then join in the fight [fight] that will give you the right to be free! Do you hear the people sing, singing a song of angry men It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again, When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes. Will you give all you can give so that the banner may advance? Some will fall and some will live, Will you stand up and take the chance? The blood of the Martys will water the meadows of France! Do you hear the people sing, singing a song of angry men It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again, When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes. ===== Background ===== The reason for selecting this song is to remind Hong Kongers not to lose hope, to encourage everyone to stand up, to speak up together, and further the fight for democracy. Another purpose is to beckon every Hong Konger and the rest of the world: in acts of conscience, call out together against the high, solid wall. (fn1) There were many unforgettable scenes during the recording process: musicians giving up their work at hand to accommodate the recording session upon short notice; musicians walking to recording studio carrying their heavy instruments on them for fear that they will be late because of traffic jams......All these sacrifices stem from everyone's desire to do what they can for this movement. Indeed, not everyone can go to the front line, but many truly want to give what they can for this movement. We don't know how long this fight will last, therefore we must stay unified and not lose hope. This is exactly the concept behind this MV, to fight together through the end and meet at the "pot-bottom" [Hong Kong Legislative Council Complex's protest area]. Last but not least, a thank you to all the participants for all their work-- including the conductor, musicians, singers, recording engineers, sound engineers, sponsors for the sound and video recording venues, actors, videographers, and sponsors for recording equipment--all of whom made this video possible. Hong Kongers truly "we connect"! Mountain climbing brothers and sisters, to each their own effort. 香港人 加油 Hong Konger Add Oil! Fn1: "High, solid wall" is a reference to Haruki Murakami's Jerusalem Prize acceptance speech in 2009, "Always on the side of the egg," in which he said, "If there is a hard, high wall and an egg that breaks against it, no matter how right the wall or how wrong the egg, I will stand on the side of the egg."
