2006 Lexus IS350 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Change

You don’t need a fancy high dollar professional OBD-II scanner that can read the transmission, or a fancy $150 specialty ATF temperature reader from Amazon. Just by using a paperclip, the car dashboard can tell you the correct temperature when you should drain the excess ATF to set the proper level. This video was filmed in HD (1080P) for clarity and has timestamps to make it easy to navigate. DON’T MISS THE EXCITING PART AT 35:10 I hope you find this video helpful, if so, please give it a “like” and “subscribe” to help out my channel. I put a lot of effort into it. Making this quality video, editing and uploading, actually took longer than it did to just perform the ATF service. This DIY service takes about an hour, starting out with a cold engine/transmission. The Lexus dealer quoted me $399.00 plus tax to change the ATF. I did it for less than $100 using supplies I bought at the dealer (aka stealership). The Lexus dealer tried to sell me the incorrect ATF for this car, it was not WS, but I insisted they sell me the WS, which does cost a little more. Lexus claims it is factory filled with “lifetime” ATF WS. No transmission fluid will last forever. If you want your transmission to last a very long time (beyond 100,000 miles) you really need to change the ATF. DIY Cost: Between $50 - $100 depending on where you buy the ATF and O-rings. I recommend always using genuine ATF WS from Lexus or Toyota. The Toyota ATF WS can even be purchased and shipped to your home from Walmart.com for less than the dealership. Always beware of fake Toyota or Lexus auto parts being sold on eBay or Amazon. Be sure the supplier is a trusted seller with real genuine parts, not fake parts with a fake Toyota or Lexus label slapped on them. Some people call this a “sealed” transmission, but it really is not sealed, it just does not have a traditional ATF dip stick. The real name is an overflow transmission. You set the ATF level by getting the fluid to a specified temp between 102F and 115F, then opening the overflow drain bolt. There is a plastic tube standing up inside the ATF pan that will allow excess fluid to come out that tube thru the check bolt. With an ambient outdoor air temperature of 77F At 32:26 -- I started the engine. At 35:10 -- The ATF reached ideal temp to drain excess thru the check bolt (it only took 2 minutes and 44 seconds to reach the temp to pull the check bolt to drain excess ATF overflow to set proper level). At 37:38 -- The ATF reached above 115F so cannot drain at this temp (2 minutes and 28 seconds later the ATF was too warm if you did not already set the level, you will have to let it cool off before trying again). Buy these items before starting the job: Qty (3) Quarts of Lexus ATF WS or Toyota ATF WS (WS=World Standard). The ATF in the quart container is the same, just a branding label difference on the outside. Qty (2) drain crush washers 35178-30010. This size fits both the drain bolt and the check bolt. Qty (1) rubber O-ring 90301-15004 for 24mm fill bolt. (Optional) This can be re-used if the rubber is still good. Tools: One paper clip, or other small piece of wire Socket wrench 10 mm socket 14 mm socket 24 mm box wrench, or 24 mm socket 5 mm Hex key (allen wrench) or socket 5 quart oil drain pan Paper towels Brake Kleen spray for clean up Funnel and 3-feet of vinyl hose, or oil transfer hand pump To get all 4 wheels off the ground so you can get under the car while it is level you will need either a lift, or a floor jack plus ramps and/or jack stands, or a mechanics in-ground pit. I also used (4) 2x4 pieces of wood about 12 to 18-inches long under the rear tires, and (1) 2x4 that was 9-inches long to jack under the rear cross member behind the differential. These are all common tools that most DIY mechanics should have. I see a lot of misinformation on the Internet and on YouTube. I made this very detailed video to take the mystery out of servicing the ATF on a 2006 Lexus IS350 (second generation IS). Torque specifications: Drain bolt: 15 ft-lbs. Check bolt: 15 ft-lbs.
