A bit of history. Czechoslovakia was portioned by Germany, Poland, and Hungary in 1938. Hungary had received ethnic claims in southern Slovakia, however, the Hungarian dictator, Miklos Horthy, was unsatisfied with the borders. On March 23, 1939, Hungary invaded Slovakia in what was called the Slovak-Hungarian War, a small border war between Slovakia and Hungary which lasted for 1 week. Slovakia lost the war and had to give up Carpathia-Ukraine, more of its southern border, and it's probably most prized position, Košice, the second biggest city in Slovakia. Hungary annexed the city and renamed it to Kassa (In Hungarian - Koša). Despite being in the Axis Pact, Slovakia had huge resentment towards the Hungarians and relations never recovered. This song was written after the Slovak-Hungarian War, expressing Slovak nationalism and dominance over the Kingdom of Hungary. It is said to be World War II song, however not used frequently throughout the war.
