The Vatican Priest Who Saved 6,500 Jews in World War II | EWTN News In Depth

During the Nazi occupation of Rome in 1943 there were around 12,000 jews living in Rome. Hitler wanted to include them in his final solution and in just a few days, 1,000 were rounded up and sent to Auschwitz. It was an incredibly tense and dangerous time for the Jewish community, and the other prisoners in the city. In the heart of Rome, at the Vatican was an Irish priest, Mons. Hugh O'Flaherty. He was living within the neutral territory of Vatican City and so was safe from the Gestapo. He organized a secret plan to hide thousands of Jews in different homes, religious houses around Rome, and inside the Vatican itself. This year marks the 60th anniversary of his death. EWTN's Colm Flynn has the incredible story. ------------ Hosted by Montse Alvarado, EWTN News In Depth welcomes guests in a discussion of current events in the Church, politics, and culture, all through the lens of the Catholic faith.
