Combined Pulmonary Fibrosis and Emphysema

Dr. Masahiro Nemoto, a Research Fellow and Pulmonologist at Chiba University in Chiba, Japan, reviews his article appearing in the November 2023 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he describes CPFE, a syndrome of combined pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema that refers to the concurrence of two disease processes in the lungs that can be difficult to diagnose and that have a high morbidity and mortality rating. He notes CPFE diagnosis is challenging since the two diseases can have impairments resulting in deceivingly normal-appearing chest radiography and spirometry in a patient with dyspnea.
