International Coastal Cleanup - Sitka, Alaska

Tlingit & Haida was honored to have staff from our Native Lands & Resources Division and Seacoast Indigenous Guardians Network invited to clean up marine debris on beaches near Sitka. Ocean Conservancy and the Sitka Sound Science Center organized cleanups on Kruzoff Island and Biorka Island in the Sitka Sound as part of the 38th annual International Coastal Cleanup. In two days, the group removed more than one ton of marine debris, everything from massive piles of fishing line to the smallest pieces of microplastics. “Khaa yáa awuné means respect for yourself, people around you and the environment,” said Chuck Miller with Sitka Tribe of Alaska. “I know my ancestors would be happy to see us cleaning up because we always kept things clean and respect everything."
