Cabrini, an Italian immigrant, was the first US citizen to be canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church. She confronted racism and sexism to found a mission in NY to take in orphans, a free school and a nursery within the first five years. By her death in 1909, she had founded the Columbus Hospital and 67 other missionary institutions to serve the sick and the poor in cities across the US, Latin America and Europe.
