Helping yourself in Parkinson’s disease. What can the patient do to make a difference?

WHILE MUCH OF THE EMPHASIS IN TREATMENT OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE IS ON PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS, THERE ARE MANY IMPORTANT STEPS THAT PEOPLE CAN TAKE THAT WILL REDUCE THE IMPACT OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE ON THEIR LIVES. THIS LECTURE WILL REVIEW AND ADDRESS THESE IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF MANAGING PARKINSON’S DISEASE. Professor Malcolm Horne is a senior member of the Neurodegeneration laboratory at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. He also spends time as consultant neurologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, Fitzroy, and is Conjoint Professor, Centre for Neurosciences at the University of Melbourne. He is a member of the Australian Society for Neurosciences, the Australian Association of Neurologists, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the American Society for Neurosciences. Professor Horne’s clinical interests are in movement disorders, especially Parkinson’s disease. His research interests relate to factors underlying the control of movement and in particular the biological basis of underlying Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, he has been studying how the nervous system repairs injured nerve cells and how these nerve cells are guided to their targets.
