Long lived, simple and very dependable. My own gorgeous AlphaSmart Neo was made between August 2004 and 2007, meaning he or she is at least seventeen years old. In 2007 production was shifted to the new model Neo2. My unit has one long-life cell battery and three AA batteries which I have changed just once in the almost four years I have been blessed to be the guardian of this quirky machine. Ever reliable, easy to operate and very forgiving, this AlphaSmart Neo is a relic from the United States school system when provision of a basic word processor was a much recognised necessity in the clasdroom, but provided in volume to offer keyboard training to students. The AlphaSmarts were manufactured in a few designs from the early 1990's up until September of 2013. AlphaSmart, Inc., formerly Intelligent Peripheral Devices, Inc., was an education technology company founded by Apple Computer engineers Joe Barrus and Ketan Kothari, and Kothari's brother, Manish Kothari, in the early 1990s. At the time of their initial release in 1993, the first AlphaSmart models were marketed as smart keyboards designed to promote writing in the classroom as an alternative to expensive computer labs. The units' durability, long battery life, and limited functionality made them ideal for K-12 classrooms. Later models expanded functionality to spell-checking, running applications, and accessing wireless printers. Containing a word processor, dictionary, calculator and touch typing modules for students, these machines now make the perfect distraction-free writing tool. The simple LCD (liquid crystal display) is easy to read in sunlight and the case weighs less than two pounds, meaning this is an easy choice for taking to the coffee shop or the park.
