East of Stranraer is one of the most important neolithic sites in Scotland. In our present day all that remains is the Droughduil Mound near Dunragit Village. This is sandwiched between the A75 and B7077 road. The complex came to light during ariel photography taken in 1992 and revealed a neolithic centre which can not be noticed at ground level. Major excavations explored the Dunragit area between 1999 and 2002. This revealed three concentric wooden circles from 4500 years ago and an early neolithic cursus. The outer most circle is 300m in diameter (six times the size of Stonehenge) and 400m south of the Droughduil Mound. At it’s base the mound is 60m by 50m, oval in shape and 10m in height. The mound was thought to be a 12th century castle, earth mote. Excavations confirmed it was created at the same time as the other close by prehistoric sites. Perhaps it functioned as a viewing platform for the neolithic people to witness ceremonies taking place within the circles. Or perhaps it served a function we don’t understand in our present day. The middle circle's entrance is aligned to the mound, the 2002 excavation season focused on this. Excavation material from the Droughduil Mound was dated to circa 4500 years ago by optically stimulated luminescence dating. This compares the site to Silbury Hill in England, the biggest and best known prehistoric mound in the UK. ---------- A BIG thanks to our ancient ancestors. ---------- Bathed in the Light - Calming by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...)
