Decades of scientific innovation, partnership, and advocacy helped transform HIV from a fatal diagnosis to one that could be managed and prevented. But approximately 1.3 million people are newly infected with HIV each year. How close are we to reach the treatment and prevention targets set by UNAIDS, in order to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030? Key population and groups are still left behind (sex workers, MSM, people who inject drugs and transgender people), and accounted for an estimated 65% of new HIV infections globally in 2020, because they often lack access to the full HIV prevention tools. In Sub Saharan Africa, 517 girls acquire HIV every day and 85% of new HIV infections are in young people aged 15-19. Women and girls accounted for 46% of all new infections in 2022. Gender inequality also contributes to the spread of HIV. It can increase infection rates, and reduce the ability of women and girls to cope with the epidemic. The session highlights the challenges of stigma, discrimination and inequalities in the global fight and what we must do to end the epidemic for everyone, everywhere.
