Gardens Deliver More Than Veggies

This is a "studio" version of the February 12 monthly meeting of the River Road Community Organization. The file made from that meeting is not available so I re recorded the slide show to put it on you tube. This presentation explains how gardens can catalyze all kinds of positive actions and outcomes in our neighborhoods. Any neighborhood. Gardens can help build community, add to a home and neighborhood's resilience and preparedness, make friends, reduce eco footprints; improve one's personal and the community's physical health and well being; self empower and much more. The presentation takes a short look at the history of permaculture in River Road. There is a show and tell of early property transformations including water catchment, edible landscaping, de paving, straw bale construction, ADUs, Community Transformations, bike site tours and hosting the 2015 NW Permaculture Convergence at the neighborhood rec center. The presentation shows what more ambitious changes to properties and world view can look like and how that can lead to a far more expanded vision for what suburbia can look like. A useful term in these ambitious changes is block planning, whether formal or ad hoc. Gardens can catalyze neighbor networks for sharing resources and looking after each other. One image shows what Jan's 15 house nearby neighborhood might look like from above with fences down, edible landscaping, place making, ADUs and more.
