Final Thoughts on How Safe is Mindanao? Leaving Zamboanga City, the Philippines.

How safe is travelling in Mindanao? There's so much bad publicity about this area of the Philippines called the Red Zone, that I thought I'd best go and explore the place myself. Since I’d been living in the Philippines over the past 4 years, I’ve continually heard that Mindanao has a bad rap. I don’t mean that nonsense spouted by the likes of Eminem, I’m talking about the fact that a lot of the island of Mindanao is considered unsafe for foreigners to visit. The British Government’s take on the region is Do not Go West young man. Especially not to the Red Zone. Advice I’d generally stuck to previously by only visiting the major cities of Cagayan De Oro, Butuan and Davao, which are considered safe to visit. But I wanted to delve further. How unsafe can Mindanao really be? And who or what am I meant to feel unsafe from? Over the past month I travelled from Negros to Dapitan City - spent 4 nights in Dipolog City; a sad night in Oroquieta City which had nothing to offer; 4 nights in Ozamiz City; 6 nights in Iligan; 8 nights in Pagadian city. Whilst in Iligan city I really wanted to go to the nearby area of Marawi which in 2017 had been the scene of the Battle of Marawi between Philippine military and Islamic State militants which lasted 5 months. According to official figures, 920 militants, 165 soldiers and 47 civilians were killed in the fighting, and more than 1,780 hostages were rescued from the IS-linked militants. I was advised not to go there, even thou the battle ended 7 years ago. On the bus to Zamboanga I met a guy who’d been involved and wounded in the battle and had received a Medal of Valor from President Duterte. Based on the island of Basilan off the coast of Zamboanga, the guy was living in the army base with his family and emphasised that Mindanao is totally safe now, although when we arrived at the bus terminal in Zamboanga I noticed he was packing heat as he transferred a pistol from his bag to his person, so that made me feel a little uneasy. The Governments advice and general concern about Mindanao has deterred most foreigners. Which was evident wherever I went as I was constantly being observed. In fact walking the Boulevard in the evening in Zamboanga felt like I was on a catwalk as all eyes were watching me as I walked past them. But If you’ve watched this series of my video you’ll see that the People are friendly and inviting here. Sure, You can say that wherever you go in the Philipppines. But I noticed that the smiles were broader here as if they were pleased you’d actually made the effort to visit that region and not believe the hype. Downtown older filipinas would approach me and say to watch my bag as there’s many bag snatchers there. So I was wary of that, but I’m consciously aware of my possessions wherever I travel anyway, so I never felt any different there at all. And never felt unsafe in that area of Mindanao. I love the multiculturalism of Mindanao. Having lived in west London for over 20 years in an area populated by a multitude of varying nationalities, I feel very much at home in Mindanao. Would I want to live in this area? Maybe this part of Mindanao is safe to visit as a tourist, but staying there long term could potentially produce problems if word gets around of a white man with a big nose living in the city. So maybe that wouldn’t be wise. But as Arnie famously said I’ll be back. This was my first time visiting western Mindanao. I have previously taken a ferry from Camiguin to Cagayan De Oro, spent time in that city, before travelling on to Davao, spending 3 weeks in Davao over Christmas 2022. On the United Kingdom’s Foreign Travel Advice website, the website states that there’s a high threat of kidnap in the Philippines, with foreign nationals targeted by both criminal and terrorist groups. The threat of kidnapping is particularly acute in Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago and offshore areas in the nearby waters of the Sulu Sea and Celebes Sea. A British national and a dual Filipino-British national were kidnapped on 4 October 2019 from a resort in Zamboanga, Western Mindanao. They were successfully rescued on 25 November 2019 by the Philippines Armed Forces. Some foreign hostages however, have been murdered. EQUIPMENT USED: Canon Sureshot G7X Mark II. GoPro HERO9 Black.
