As part of the Altus Suite assessment, along with the Snapshot and the Duet, CASper is sometimes used by professional programs to evaluate applicants' non-cognitive abilities. If you are familiar with Multiple Mini Interviews, it is easier to imagine the CASPer test as an online, written MMI. CASPer questions consist of written or video prompts or scenarios, and then you are typically asked about your thoughts on the case, how you might resolve the situation, or even how your perspective would change if one of the variables was different. Of course, all of this has to be typed in a limited number of characters and in a limited amount of time. Possibly the most frequently asked question about CASPer is, “How is CASPer scored?”. While this isn’t a secret per se, it is not something schools or administrators will actively provide you with, although the publicly available research by CASPer creators provide many hints. Just like with scoring for the other two Altus Suite components, the Snapshot interview and the Duet profile, how the CASPer test is scored is not often talked about. As we discuss in our CASPer prep book, keep in mind that knowing how the scoring system works is not the same (and not even as important) as knowing what the assessors are looking for when scoring the questions.
