Two Projector Portrait Projects | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Light modifiers come in all shapes and sizes but optical projectors, sometimes called optical snoots, might just be the most overlooked of them all. With a light at one end and a lens at the other, the optical projector is designed for cast a pattern of light on a background or even a subject. In this video photographer Gavin Hoey takes two different optical projectors and creates two very different looks. Starting with a Nanlite LED projector, Gavin explains the basics of how optical projectors work with gobo’s to produce a focused or defocused a pattern effect. He them uses the projector to shine a simple shape across a wall and adds a second LED light to create a series of colorful portraits. Next Gavin switches to a Spekular Light Blaster projector and a Flashpoint EVOLV200 as his light. By placing his model between himself and the optical projector Gavin shows how a little bit of smoke can create stunning and unique backgrounds from thin air.
