This is the actual recording of Eruption before mixing. That is indeed Eddie Van Halen playing the guitar and recording the song Eruption that we all love and know currently on the first album. It's pre-mixed. Lack of reverb is the biggest thing I noticed. They used the reverb chambers at Sunset Studios to get that right-panned stereo speaker reverb and added that afterwards; then panned the dry guitar part to the left which Eddie wasn't too fond of in any of his albums. The panning that is, not the reverb. Hence why when you get to the 5150 album (recording at his own studio) there is a stereo signal from the guitar. I put a lot of time into making these isolated tracks because I love Van Halen.
