Ever wanted to know who was behind some of the writing of George Orwell? A fascinating read about the life of Eileen O'Shaughnessy, or Eileen Blair, the wife of George Orwell. Anna Funder brings Eileen to life in this book where we learn just how much she influenced the work of Orwell in the years of their marriage. This book made me think a lot about the sacrifice of time in a relationship. It made me think of another Australian couple, Joan and Darrel Lindsay who, both creatives (one a writer, the other a painter), equally shared their time and space so they could pursue their creative interests. Was it a sign of the times they lived in where the woman gave their time for their husband's to pursue their career; was it a sign of wealth where couples could view themselves as equals? Or was it the factor of having a family that determines the uneven distribution of time to pursue creative interests in a relationship? What did you think of this book?
