Little Owls | Feeding one week old chicks | Breeding Birds Of Prey

One week on from hatching we catch up with the Little Owl chicks. Have a look at the first video and you'll soon realise they are now twice the size - weighing between 21g and 27g. They hatched at between just 10g and 12g! - What is happening to the chicks? Two chicks went straight back to the parents, two days after hatching, to be parent reared. They are doing well! The other four have stayed with me as they are being hand reared. This is because they are going to be flown as educational ambassadors. They are going to live with other falconers I know and trust, who will work with them correctly and free fly them. These owls are captive bred, not taken from the wild. It is illegal in the UK to release captive bred birds into the wild. I breed a very small number of birds where there is demand from other falconers. A few other quick facts about them: - Their eyes will start to open in the next couple of days. - They will be fully feathered and ready to fly at just 6 weeks, and will be giving it a good go before then! - They are eating raw mouse today. They can only eat raw meat. They do not eat seeds or leaves. I give them a diet that nutritionally matches a typical diet for a Little Owl in the wild. It is a mixed whole carcass meat diet.
