A Jules Verne Sci-fi vision of attacking dragons and dinosaurs brought to life in "Monstascope"! In 1881 Algeria two men are dueling when a low-flying comet passes Earth. A strong wind is created by the low altitude and the pair are transported to the moon. When there they discover a prehistoric world filled with giant animals and cave-dwelling people. They learn to navigate the land while they wait for another comet to come and return them to Earth. 1961 American black and white science fiction film loosely based on Jules Verne's Off on a Comet and heavily dependent on stock footage from the movies One Million B.C., King Dinosaur, Cat-Women of the Moon and Rodan. Director Edward Bernds says the film was built around stock footage from One Million B.C. Long summary: Two men preparing for a duel in 1881 Algiers, Irishman Michael Denning and Frenchman Hector Servadac, are swept from the face of the Earth by a passing comet and find themselves on another world with cavemen and prehistoric animals. They try to find a way back to Earth. (Servadac is the only one of 36 characters retained from the original novel.) The men are separated after an attack by an angry mammoth. Servadac finds refuge with the River People and falls for a beautiful blonde, Deena. Denning falls in with the Cave People, where he falls in love with brunette Nateeta. The two men are reunited rescuing the Cave People from attacking Dinosaurs (this earth's dragons) with an avalanche. They persuade the River People and Cave People to stop fighting and settle down with their respective women. They vow to try and get on the Earth the next time the comet approaches in seven years. Director: Edward Bernds Stars: Cesare Danova, Sean McClory, Joan Staley, Danielle De Metz Trivia: This film, with its monster movie title, was based on Jules Verne's 1877 novel "Hector Servadac" (aka "Career of a Comet" aka "Off on a Comet"). Some US advertising materials promoted the movie as having been filmed in "Monstascope", suggesting some kind of wide-screen process, but this was entirely misleading. In fact, the film was photographed with spherical lenses and projected at 1.85:1 - wider than the regular Academy aperture (1.37:1), but not quite CinemaScope. Reportedly one of the cost-cutting measures was the recycling of the Morlock costumes from George Pal's production, "The Time Machine" (1960). The original source material is credited as "Career of the Comet." It was also published in English as "Hector Servadac" (Jules Verne's original title), "Off on a Comet" and "On the Comet." Jules Verne adaptations were in vogue at the time ever since the success of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days. Zimbalist had the rights to footage for One Million B.C. (1940). Zimbalist and his partner Bryan Roberts formed a company to adapt the novel. "Jules Verne is a bigger name than Marlon Brando," said Zimbalist. "Maybe bigger."
