With a landmark 12th century Viking cathedral and an internationally renowned whiskey distillery (Highland Park), Kirkwall punches well above its weight. This small town is the centre of life in the windswept Orkney Islands. Known in Old Norse as Kirkjuvagr, Kirkwall began life as a small village with a sheltered harbour before rapidly expanding in the 12th century to become an important North Atlantic Viking stronghold. These days it's the perfect base from which to explore the landscapes and neolithic sites of Orkney, boasting a range of hotels, and independent shops and eateries. This film will give you a taste of Kirkwall and features an interview with Judith Glue (whose knitwear store has faced the cathedral for over 40 years) and popular local artist Jane Glue (whose art is available through www.janeglue.com).
