Two Must Have Items For Shoulder Surgery

Hi, I'm Dr. Molly with your Goals Physical Therapy. If you're about to go in for a shoulder surgery, then you've more than likely been told what you need. You're going to be wearing a sling for some amount of time. Some times for 4 weeks some times for six weeks depending on the surgery. Then you're going to need to ice because of the discomfort. You're going to have your pre-op appointments. You’re going to have post-op appointments. And you're probably planning out how people are going to help you take care of yourself and how you’re going to get from place to place. Well, I have two tips that I always give people that they should have in their post surgery bag. I thought I would share those today. They're a little bit lighthearted, but who doesn't want to be as comfortable as possible after having shoulder surgery. First tip, spray on deodorant makes your life so much easier. You don't have to ask somebody to help you put on deodorant anymore, because all you have to do is aim, right? The question is never, how do you get it on the surgery side, it's how do you get it on the non-surgery side? And we live in Houston, it's a hundred degrees outside, and lots of people don't want to deal with feeling unfresh. So my solution is spray on deodorant. Second tip is front clasping bras. Some women have no problems wearing no bra for six weeks or whatever length of time they're not going to be able to move their arms effectively. But for those of us who do not feel comfortable, just letting it all hang out, I suggest buying one or two front clasping bras. That way you don't have to worry about asking for help, you just have to put it on one arm and then the other and you can clasp it yourself. Nobody wants to feel like they have to ask for everything to be done for them after surgery. I hope that my lighthearted suggestions help you. Good luck on your surgery!
