What Attracts Expats to live in Kerala, India? Foreigner exploring Kochi, Mattancherry, Jew Town.

Having recently watched the Real Marigold Hotel Reality Documentary Series about British retirees deliberating on choosing Kerala as a retirement destination, with Series 2 set in Fort Kochi, I decided to spend a few days here. I’ve visited Fort Kochi a few times over the past 35 years, So in my last video I posed the question Could I retire here? Actually to retire and tie yourself down at my young age seems futile really. Why would you narrow yourself down to one place? Unless you’re lacking faculties or desire, There’s too may places to see in the world, so just keep moving. As Supergrass so wonderfully encouraged last century. So a question I regularly ask myself in every location I find myself nowadays is: Could I live here? If I need to. If I get locked down. Or meet a lady who lives there. Would I be happy there? Sorry, that’s asking a lot of me. I mean, would I be content there? So what do I look for in when assessing whether somewhere is a good place to live? It needs to have a variety of restaurants and alfresco cafes where you can sit and relax and watch the world go by. In most places I stay I will find my favorite places that I like and regularly return to them for the duration of my stay. And what is of equal importance is how I feel seated alone, as a single traveller. Years ago in my younger days when I travelled alone I’d very conspicuous dining alone. I’d feel that all eyes were on me, judging my situation. It doesn’t bother me anymore. And also I believe there are many more people travelling alone than there were in the past. Or am I just A town/city/beach needs to have enough going on to keep me satisfied. Was I mean by that is that when I walk the streets which I do a lot I need to feel that I’m seeing something new. Of course you never know what you’re gonna come across each time you leave your front door, but having lived in Cebu for almost 3 years it wasn’t offering me much anymore and I felt that I’d worn out the paths I trod as everything became too familiar. Nowadays I don’t really make a definite decision how long I’m gonna stay somewhere I will just move on when I’ve exhausted it and are bored with revisiting the same restaurants. It needs to have a good wifi which is important for my work. You’d think that would be a given nowadays with the world wanting to be connected at all times. But some areas even in 2023 have poor wifi connection. I spend a long time checking guest house reviews. I need to. I can’t stay at a place with weak wifi. And reading reviews of Fort Kochi, not many reviewers mentioned wifi at all, as if not many Digital Nomads, for want of a better term stay in Fort Kochi. There seems to be lots of retirees and travelers who aren’t reliant on wifi for their work. So I booked into Seaways Inn as good wifi was mentioned and also because it had a decent rooftop area to work from. And in general I need to feel comfortable there. I need to feel that the people are welcoming and if I get sick there might be someone on hand to come and mop my sweaty forehead. I said Forehead. I now have a 5 year India e-visa allowing me to stay for 180 days per calendar year. How wonderful is that? India finally became open to non-vaccinated tourists in November 2022, but I haven't been able to return to this magical country until a year later. EQUIPMENT USED: Canon Sureshot G7X Mark II.
