Departure Statement for Visits to Brunei Darussalam and Singapore 05/28/2024

Villamor Air Base, Pasay City May 28, 2024 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. delivers his departure statement at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City as he embarks on his first State Visit to Brunei Darussalam, followed by a Working Visit to Singapore for the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue on 28-31 May 2024. According to Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Spokesperson Ambassador Ma. Teresita Daza, President Marcos Jr. is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Bruneian officials to explore new avenues for cooperation and strengthen the bilateral relationship between the Philippines and Brunei. He is also slated to participate in a high-level business forum, where he will engage in discussions with top business leaders to foster increased trade and investment opportunities in both countries. Likewise, the President will meet with the Filipino community to pay tribute to the contributions of almost 23,000 Filipinos living in Brunei. This inaugural visit coincides with the 40th anniversary of bilateral relations between the Philippines and Brunei, which were established in 1984. As he proceeds to Singapore, President Marcos Jr. will deliver a keynote address at the opening of the 21st IISS Shangri-La Dialogue — Asia's premier defense summit. The Dialogue provides a good platform for defense leaders, military officials, government representatives and security experts to discuss and address regional and global security challenges. On the sidelines of his visit, the Chief Executive is set to meet with new Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to strengthen the 55-year-old Philippines-Singapore diplomatic relations. Additionally, he will have a brief meeting with former Prime Minister and current Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong. His participation in the 21st IISS Shangri-La Dialogue underscores the Administration's commitment to promoting a peaceful, secure and prosperous Philippines for all Filipinos, both domestically and abroad.
