Driving piles into the ground - Heien paal in de grond - Crazy Dutch House Foundations! Much of The Netherlands is, of course, reclaimed land. As such, Dutch engineering in this country is quite well known around the world. Since the 1700’s Holland has been built on wooden foundation piles or foundation poles, driven deep into the soft peat moss, blubber and sand. Modern-day, two-story houses in Holland also get numerous steel or prefabricated steel and concrete reinforced foundation poles. These foundation piles are huge. Extremely long, as in 82 feet or 25 meters in length! Watching, and hearing them, get driven into the ground is quite something. You can’t miss seeing it and you certainly can’t not hear it, for miles around! Pile driving, the Dutch way! Een groot deel van Nederland is natuurlijk droogmakerij.
