ZOO Skopje During its existence, the Garden plays an important role in the educational, cultural and recreational life not only of the City but also beyond, and is one of the most visited institutions in the City and beyond in the Republic. The Skopje Zoo was established in 1926 by a three-member commission headed by Dr. Stanko Karaman, then the current location was proposed, which covered an area of 4 hectares until the end of 1965. At that time the Garden had a modest number of animals. Over the years the Garden has expanded and the collection of animals has increased. Today the Garden is located on an area of 12 hectares, and has a collection of 495 animals of 96 species (mammals, birds, reptiles). It has an economic part, a workshop, a veterinary clinic, an amusement park for children, an educational center. The Garden has 50 employees and 7 volunteers. From 1926 to 1991 the Zoo is under the jurisdiction of the City of Skopje. From 1991 to 2005 it passed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia, and with the decentralization from 01.09.2005 it is under the City of Skopje. It has established cooperation with other zoos such as: Bitola, Zagreb, Belgrade, Nuremberg, Palic, Ljubljana, Cologne, Moscow, Vienna. In 2006 the Zoo started cooperation with EAZA (European Association of Zoological and Aquariums), and since May 2009 the Garden has been granted EASA Candidate status. The Zoo holds practical classes for students from secondary and primary schools as well as scientific research. The zoo is open to visitors 365 days a year. The garden is currently under reconstruction.
