Three days of happiness is a very short light novel (also has a manga adaptation) that goes deep into this idea of living live passively with grand expectations, right up until the point where the bubble pops and the main character is left with only 3 months to live. It's a great story that touches on topics relating to regrets, self-delusions, hope, and love.
