What a finish! Poet's Word denies Crystal Ocean in King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Poet's Word runs out the winner of the 2018 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, rallying in fine style up the Ascot straight to beat stablemate Crystal Ocean in a fantastic finish to the Group One highlight for trainer Sir Michael Stoute - his record-breaking sixth success in the race - jockey James Doyle and owner Saeed Suhail. The lightly-raced Poet's Word took his form to new heights as a five-year-old, Stoute once again showing his master touch with older horses. The son of Poet's Voice began his season with victory in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown before landing the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot from three-time Group One winner Cracksman and dual top-level scorer Hawkbill. He then improved again for victory in the King George, one of the mid-summer highlights of the European Flat racing calendar. On Poet's Word and Crystal Ocean, Stoute said: "Two wonderful brave athletes. The first reaction is you feel sorry for the one that got beaten. "It was a pity there was a loser. That's how you sum it up. Doyle could have done a little bit better and got a dead-heat!" He went on: "They are two such admirable horses and it's delightful to train them. I always felt he wouldn't get there until the last 100 yards or so." 2018 KING GEORGE VI AND QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES FULL FINISHING ORDER: 1 Poet's Word (7/4) 2 Crystal Ocean (6/4F) 3 Coronet (15/2) 4 Salouen (20/1) 5 Rostropovich (12/1) 6 Desert Encounter (33/1) 7 Hydrangea (10/1)
