After a winter of use, my "back up" pair of wheels were showing signs of wear. They weren't spinning smoothly and the rear axle had started to come loose. This is how I got them back to being road worthy. Cleaning thoroughly. Replacing the bearings. Replacing the cone nuts. Using worn cone nuts will just mean that your wheels won't spin smoothly and you'll increase the wear. Each replacement axle cost me around £4. FYI, the rear has the same process, only the stacks on each side will differ according to the gearing and style of hub.
