A forgotten filmmaking technique.

0:00 - For Jack 0:28 - Shadows 1:21 - Light 2:35 - Hunter's Dream 5:38 - Expression 7:35 - Credits and Tech Specs Short film scene breakdown:    • shooting a short film yourself   Soundtrack:    • Clever Ghost Music: Year of the Dragon   Jack:    / @crappyfish1235   Dear Ghosts, Happy Lunar New Year! This video is dedicated to Jack, whom put this topic on the radar for me. Clipping highlights isn’t as underground as I made it out to be here. I’ve seen it in some big films like Minority Report, but most have not intentionally leaned into it as much as the films I’ve mentioned. Do I like this look? It’s really hard to say actually. I think in some cases it does actually look more cinematic than standard exposure, but I generally prefer more natural cinematography. I think a practical application for clipping is when you have boring flat shots in the daytime. I don’t think it has to be that bold either but this is my personal modern take without bloom or halation. I’ve simply presented the information as nuanced as I can, this as new to me as it must be for you, do you like it or think it’s terribad? YouTube compression was quite severe for this one so I had to crank up the noise reduction more than usual, but fingers crossed if there is an improvement, there should be banding, but it should have less movement and pixelation. Unfortunately skin might look more plasticky than usual. It’s also annoying that I had to regrade after a test upload, so shadows should be blacker than usual and in general higher contrast, which I believe is a look YouTube compression is a bit kinder towards. Regarding the Sigma FP, 8 bit colorwise is decent, slightly more muted when shifting exposure but the biggest drawback is banding and dynamic range.
