The 2020 Azeri offensive against Armenian troops was a military masterpiece, with excellent military planning and careful execution, and one goal in mind, to take back Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia. Nagorno-Karabakh was always inhabited by a majority of ethnic Armenians as well as Azeris. They lived rather peacefully together under the Russian empire and the Soviet Union. Tensions erupted in the late 1980s when nationalistic sentiments flared up all of the USSR. As Nagorno-Karabakh was officially part of Azerbaijan, ethnic Armenians demanded to be reunited with Armenia. In the end in 1994, Armenian forces would win the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, and form the autonomous Republic of Arstakh. There are many reasons for this victory. Armenia had a lot of officers with combat experience from Afghanistan and lots of military equipment, and it benefitted from the support of local Armenian guerillas. Fast forward to the 21st Century. As Azerbaijan became wealthier, its military became stronger, and started challenging the status quo. For example in April 2016, a series of clashes had already erupted in Nagorno-Karabakh. The turning point would come with Turkey's increasing support towards Azerbaijan, for both ethnolinguistic and geopolitical reasons. Turkey provided Azerbaijan with numerous drones, special forces specialists and NATO level military training. Surprisingly, Israel was also one of the countries that helped Azerbaijan revamp its military. By 2020, Azerbaijan had modernized its military to fight a 21st century war when Armenia was stuck with Cold War equipment and tactics.
