Grandma Moses art is a quintessential slice of Americana. Anna Mary Robertson Moses [Sept 7, 1860 - Dec 13, 1961] is renowned in America for being its foremost portrayer of Folk Art. She was born in 1860 - on a farm in Greenwich, New York, and was one of ten children. She had a happy childhood, but was somewhat impoverished. Anna grew up loving arts, crafts, and also became proficient in tapestry as well as quilting. At the age of 27, she married one of the hired hands and had a family of 10 herself. However, 5 of the children died young. When Grandma Moses developed arthritis, a friend suggested that she try painting instead of stitching. The rest, is HISTORY....She had here first art exhibition when she was in her late 70's .For, she is living proof that the human spirit can triumph at any age... . Grandma Moses paintings have been reproduced as Christmas Cards, tiles, and fabrics throughout America and abroad.....President Harry S. Truman presented her with the Woman's National Press Club trophy Award for outstanding accomplishment in Art in 1949. On her 100th birthday, New York Governor, Nelson Rockefeller, proclaimed the day as "Grandma Moses Day" in her honor.
