What kind of ball and how much air pressure do I use? 3/1/2021

Q: “What kind of ball do you use and how much air pressure?” A: The ball you will see me use most frequently is a Jim Bradley Pro ball 6x9 and I normally run just over 2psi. Some guys like a lot of air in their ball to help speed up the rebound. That can help and hurt when you do that. It will definitely add more rebound to the ball but it’s also harder on the ball and your hands and will make the ball very squarely. Q: “How come my ball doesn’t seem as fast as yours?” A: I remember feeling the same way. So I bought a Title super speed bag 5x8 and couldn’t wait for it to get to my house so I could be as fast as speed bag skunk!! once it finally arrived I got home from work so excited and threw it up on my drum and bam!!!! Totally disappointed, it wasn’t going any faster than my other bags, if anything it was slower. I hated that bag, I even reached out to Skunk and said “what the hell man, this ball sucks!” He then explained that a lot of balls need a little bit of break in time. He was right, it did need some break on time. One more thing that helped speed the ball up was replacing the heavy stock bladder that comes in the titles with an Enkay replacement bag. Much much lighter and have a faster rebound. For a ball that I hated at first, I would up putting a ton of hours using that bag. One of the things most people don’t realize is the ball won’t change the speed of the action near as much as a short swivel action. The closer you get the ball to your drum the quicker the action will be. If you have a long chain link swivel, no matter how small of a ball you put on there you will always be limited for speed by the length of you swivel. Q:“What size ball should I get?” A: This is an extremely difficult question to answer because it comes down to personal preferences. It’s like someone asking what kind of motorcycle should I buy. You won’t really know what you like till you get your hands on the grips, or bag. Some guys love a super small bag with a super short action, and some guys like a larger ball with more weight and a little longer action in the swivel. I’ve also seen large bags actually rebound faster than the small bags purely due to physics, a larger ball hits the drum surface quicker than a small ball which In turn actually gets it back to BDC (bottom dead center where you want to make contact) faster than a peanut ball (4x7) The larger balls are fantastic for adding some weight to the ball which can help you steady and clean up new combinations then you can work on doing the same combinations with a smaller ball. The smaller the ball the more accurate you have to be because they are extremely unforgiving when it comes to technique. I personally think starting out and learning how to speed bag a 6x9 ball is a really good down the middle of the road ball. You can make them go super fast and you can also slow them down and really focus on controlled technique and form. For swivels you can check out my post on those. Speed bag Swivels.
