Did you know that autumn is one of the best times for visiting Lake Biwa? Lake Biwa is located near Kyoto and is Japan's largest freshwater lake. It's best explored by bike, as then you can take your time enjoying the lake views, and autumn foliage, and visiting all the sights surrounding the lake. We cycled around Lake Biwa anti-clockwise (which is recommended) and cycled approximately 40-70km each day. While the southeast side has beautiful parks and gardens, the central-eastern side around Omihachiman offers an abundance of sights to explore. From stunning Hikone Castle, to nature paths around a marsh and old samurai villages, there's so much to see! The northern part of Lake Biwa is mountainous and you need to be careful which route to take. Lots of climbing always comes with the reward of stunning viewpoints over the lake. On the southwest side, you will see more traffic and built-up towns as you get closer to Otsu Station, but nevertheless, you can find a few outstanding temples that are definitely worth a visit. We started and ended cycling at Otsu Station (a short train ride from Kyoto Station) and stayed in guesthouses each night. Book in advance if you can, as there are not many options around the lake!
