Southern Trains at Lewes on May 12th 2022

1st visit to Lewes on the East Coastway Line and the Junction for the Seaford Branch Line to Seaford as well. All services featured from Southern and even a appearance of a BR Livery Class 313 (313201) which was running to Seaford on the day. The First version of Lewes was opened on June 8th 1846 located on Friars Walk was originally built as a terminus of the Brighton Line however 19 days later the line was extended to Hastings. The new rail line at the time caused problems with services to Brighton having to reverse west of the station and at the time the director of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway described the original layout as 'the most incomplete and injudicious stations ever erected' The following year the connecting line from Haywards Heath via Keymer Junction with the platforms situated to the west opposite of the terminus called Pinwell. Eventually in 1857 Lewes station was re-sited at the point when the line towards Keymer Junction diverged and resulting with Pinwell closing. In 1868 a new aligned Wealden Line was opened which ran through part of the goods yard and terminus which before being built ran North between Lewes Tunnel and Cooksbridge which originally joined the line to Keymer junction at Hamsey Junction The present layout dates from a rebuild in 1889 when all services were diverted from the loop line from Lewes and Southerham Junction although the original route it ran on was retained for goods traffic and to increase capacity on the platforms the curve was realigned. Severe disruption took place on November 5th 1960 when severe flooding suspended all electric services which had to be replaced for considerable time by Steam services if were avaliable. One plan was proposed to blow up the London Bound Platforms which was requested by a borough surveyor to enable flood water to escape via the track bed however it was refused after a BR engineer failed to co-operate with the plan. The former Uckfield to Lewes Line closed on February 23rd 1969 which to enable a relief road to be built however over the years there have been proposals of reinstating the original line as part of Brighton Mainline 2 which would act as a alternative route if the main route on the Brighton Mainline was disrupted although the only present example of diverts is via the Arun Valley Line via Horsham and then proceed to Littlehampton before reversing onto the West Coastway Line via Hove. Today there are 5 Platforms with 2 on the Lewes to Keymer Junction Line and 3 on the East Coastway Line however at the time of filming Platform 1 was rarely being used. Seaford services operated by Class 313s diverge towards Southease whilst the East Coastway Line continues towards Glynde with those being used by Class 377s from London Victoria and Brighton to Hastings and Ore via Eastbourne. From March 2020 to April 2022 Gatwick Express services was suspended so the GX Class 387s were used elsewhere either for Great Northern to Cambridge, Ely and Kings Lynn or Southern services not just to Brighton but even Eastbourne itself. From May 2021 to December 2021 6 Class 387s were temporary sent on hire to Great Western Railway however eventually returned to Great Northern and Southern however at the time of filming although Gatwick Express services were running to Brighton however were only running Half Hourly resulting not all sets being running on the Brighton Mainline in fact some were still operating on Great Northern.
