2022 Stockton Fire Department Year In Review

The concept of ‘family’ runs deep within the culture of the Stockton Fire Department and Local 456. Very rarely are men and women required to care so closely for one another; trust so wholly; or be so fiercely codependent each and every day. In this family there is much mutual love, respect, and admiration. There is nothing so painful as the loss of a member of your family. On January 31st, 2022, Stockton Firefighters Local 456 suffered the tragic death of our brother and Fire Captain Vidal ‘Max’ Fortuna. It was, and very much continues to be, devastating to us. Max was a beloved friend to many, and an enemy to none. He was held in high regard in the ranks as one of our senior and most respected Captains. He was a professional and competent paramedic. He was extremely proficient in practicing his craft on the fireground. The 1991 Rules and Regulations state that the ideal Stockton Firefighter must "Keep themselves physically, mentally and morally fit; who are obedient; who have the grit and tenacity to persevere under trying conditions; and who have the moral courage to stand by their honest convictions.” That was Max. He was considered a ‘Legacy Fireman,’ a term and connotation that is very meaningful to us. Even more than his professional capabilities, Max was a good friend. He always had a sly smirk or a witty comment. He was soft spoken, funny, and good to those around him. He liked to party and was always the first one on the dance floor. He was always ‘IN’ on whatever was fun. He never, ever complained or shirked work. Ever. He just got up and handled business every day. He is missed so damn much that it hurts many of us every day just thinking about him. We will celebrate in honor of the wonderful life you lived. We Love You Max.
